CHANTRY SINGS FOR MASS AT ST. MARY’S ON THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY, MONDAY JANUARY 6 – For our Extraordinary Form Mass for the Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord on the feast day itself, Monday, January 6, at 7:30 p.m., Chantry will sing splendid Renaissance polyphony including Byrd’s great
Gradualia Propers for Epiphanyand—since for the Renaissance the Star of Bethlehem was related to another star, Mary the Star of the Sea—Victoria’s beautiful
Missa Ave maris stella. The music for the Mass will also include great motets inspired by the story of the Magi. Reviewing Chantry’s June 2019 performance of Renaissance polyphony at St. Mary’s, Washington Classical Review said Chantry “sings this music extremely well,” with pieces “crystalline in structure and balance,” sound with “a virtuosic sheen,” and singing with “delightful rhythmic alacrity.”
