Chantry sings a special concert for the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day at St. Mary Mother of God on Sunday, November 11, at 3:00 p.m. Discount tickets for parishioners are available from the Rectory. The concert features masterpieces of Renaissance and Baroque polyphony composed in memory of the departed. Victoria’s Requiem, widely regarded as one of the finest works by Spain’s greatest composer, is one of the greatest of all Requiem Masses. Purcell’s Funeral Music, written for the funeral of Queen Mary II, is characterized by Baroque expressiveness and somber beauty. Settings of Justorum animae (The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God) by Lassus and Byrd, and Schütz’s great Selig sind die Toten (Blessed are the dead) are filled with serenity and peace in the face of death. Chantry most recently visited the parish to sing for our solemn high extraordinary form Mass on the Feast of the Assumption last August. The Washington Post has described Chantry’s singing as having “edge-of-seat vitality” and “vast expressive capacity and deeply ingrained sense of style,” while All Arts Review has called Chantry “one of the musical glories of Washington.”
Tickets ($40 adult, $20 young adult ages 23-30, $10 youth/student age 22 and below) are available at the door or on chantrydc.com.
Parishioners of St. Mary Mother of God get half the price of the ticket. Please visit the Rectory by Friday November 9 to claim your discount passes.
